Jericho Cutter… The Movie??
Last week on our Instagram Page, we randomly and for no reason at all asked our followers… “If Jericho Cutter was a big budget blockbuster film, who would you cast as the lead?” Surprisingly, it was well received and we got a lot of participation and great suggestions. Of course Jericho Cutter isn’t really being turned into a movie (yet) but it’s always good to put things into the universe that you would love to see happen. #Manifestation. So why not?
The votes were close but we are happy with the final results based on feedback from the Oddities (No that is not the official name of the Odd Ninja Fanbase and yes, we just made that up on the spot. Maybe it will stick but, for their sake, hopefully it won’t.)
Pretty good looking cast! The Oddities did an EXCELLENT job as casting directors for a movie that doesn’t exist (yet). Thank you all!
That was a lot of fun but we weren’t ready to stop so we took this concept a step further and launched Odd Ninja Records then enlisted BlackDroog to Executive Produce the Soundtrack album. Why? Because every great movie needs a great soundtrack… even if the movie doesn’t exist (yet).
First step was the album cover. We wanted something simple and classy that would showcase Jericho in all of his badass glory. Check it out:
In our humble and “unbiased” opinion, if Jericho was a rapper, this indeed would be the album cover for the illest and most fire mixtape of the summer! We’re talking GOAT instant classic material!!!
The next step was coming up with a lineup of artists that would communicate the tone and energy of Jericho Cutter: The Movie but also be genuinely entertaining. And since we had a whopping budget of $0 and this album probably will never get made or approved by any record labels, we were pretty much open to a pool of the entire universe of musicians when crafting this musical masterpiece.
Lastly the (most) fun part… Song titles! Since this is an album of “music inspired by the motion picture” we needed song titles that would parallel the narrative of the film as well as echo the themes and tone of the story. Here is what we came up with:
We don’t want to toot our own horn but DAMN… This is AOTY quality!!! All jokes aside, it was a fun experience and proved to be valuable to the creative process because it forced us to think about the comic in another light beyond just words and pictures. Interpreting the theme and tone of the comic through music really gives an extra layer to the overall presentation and the approach to writing future issues. We highly recommend this exercise for any writers or artists reading this post.
FUN FACT: Track #1 actually exists! This is a relic from 2013 when the first iteration of the Jericho Cutter comic was created. The artist on the vocals, Shuterworth, was also the artist of the original Jericho Cutter comic. Multi-talented brother right there. The original Jericho Cutter comic is a long story worthy of its own blog post so stay tuned for that but for now… here is the track:
After our “fantasy draft” casting session and A&R duties, we hadn't had enough of this concept of Jericho Cutter: The movie… so, just for the hell of it, we reimagined Jericho Cutter as a horror movie and designed a movie poster using some sinister concept art from Tonio Maicon:
We considered using the catchphrase: “Roses are Red…And So is Blood” but rightfully decided against it. Way too corny.
While Jericho Cutter will likely never turn into a horror movie, this was another useful exercise to aide the overall creative process. Something about taking an existing project and dramatically changing the genre for the sake of development or concept art, helps you further zero in on what your true intentions are behind your project. It’s also a great way to have fun with your characters with very little commitment that can easily be undone and forgotten if/when it doesn’t work.
Maybe one day Jericho Cutter will be a movie and we can do this for real! That would be amazing! But, until then, we will just keep on pumping out more comic content and tell Jericho’s story in it’s original medium.
Jericho Cutter #2 COMING SOON!!!
